Shanghai Days and Shanghai Nights........

We had a crazy early morning flight from Chengdu to Shanghai using a Chinese 'budget' airline (which was the equivelant of a British airways flight which was lovely!) most of our flights were booked via Travel Zen and we got some fantastic deals. We arrived in Shanghai airport mid morning and hopped in a taxi to our hotel which was Beautiful, our standard room at The Grand Central Shanghai was amazing we really got to relax here after a full on few days of travelling, sightseeing and noisy neighbourhoods it was a real oasis. The views from our room overlooked the most bizarre mix of wealth and originality it was quite clear the new sky scraping Shanghai was trying to take over the original city with our hotel overlooking Chinese housing blocks where they hang their washing out of their windows on home made wooden structures (which they also use for building 🙈) that were surrounded by fancy hotels and restaurants.

The one thing we were disappointed about (particularly Louis) was that Shanghai is so westernised they only really use cutlery and no chop sticks after all our practice and that they had western brands on every corner especially Starbucks. We decided to go and have a wonder around we were staying the road behind the shopping street and when we walked on to it we were amazed by how busy it was, people everywhere little buses every where shuttling people from shop to shop and some of the most amazing shops all in one place! It was amazing! We wondered around some back streets taking in the local life and seeing what this place is all about it really was amazing and not at all what it's flashy exterior would have you believe it was, we found Shanghai was where we were most popular people taking our photos everywhere we went and even filming us we found it so funny as we are really low key people normally!

We had a early night and caught up on some sleep ready for a full day of exploring. When the morning came we got breakfast and headed out to the Bund to go see what all the fuss was about, as we approached the road we could see expensive shops, jewellers and hotels it was a amazing build up to the extravagance of Shanghai, along the Bund was a unique mix (like the rest of Shanghai) of buildings a lot of them resembling old London buildings it really was amazing to see but the same as the rest of the city it was busy! We struggled to walk next to each other as we worked our way through the throng of tourist (which is my favourite thing about China... The Chinese love a tour and they all wear matching hats and follow a matching coloured flag, we saw so many of these groups everywhere we went and they really did put a smile on our faces) we managed to make our way to the quieter part of Shanghai where there we market stalls and shops every where with real Chinese heritage and again we received so much attention for being English (though we were becoming pros at this point almost as good a kim and kanye 😂).

For the evening we decided to get the metro (which only cost 50p!!!) to Pudong to go see what all the fuss was about across the water, when we walked out of the metro station we were greeting by an array of sky scraping buildings and the hectic pace of life there, we wondered along the waters front and looked back over the Bund the scenery both sides of the water was so amazing I couldn't imagine what it would be like to see those views everyday. The main reason I wanted to go across to Pudong was to go to the top of the Jin Mao tower where they have a section on the 88th floor that is glass all the way round which makes the best viewing place to watch the sunset over Shanghai a memory that will stay with me forever, we went up early and hung around for a hour as the sky was taken over by a pink glow it was stunning and a must do if you go to Shanghai!

As our stay in Shanghai was short we headed back to our hotel to get some rest ready for our flight the next day to Hong Kong... We made sure we took full advantage of the super quick trains of China and got the bullet train from Shanghai to the airport we hit 300km/h apparently it goes a lot faster on certain days/times too!
